You booked your family photo session — now comes the question almost everyone asks: What are we going to wear?
At Framed by Ash Photography, I want preparing for your session to feel exciting, not stressful. Whether we're photographing your family outdoors around Metro Atlanta or creating something beautiful right at home, what you wear can help bring the entire look together.
Here are a few simple tips to help you plan.
1. Coordinate, Don't Match
Gone are the days when everyone needs the exact same shirt!
Instead, choose two or three complementary colors and build everyone's outfits around them. This gives your photos a coordinated look while still allowing everyone's personality to show.
2. Start With One Outfit
Not sure where to begin? Choose one person's outfit first and build from there.
For example, if Mom has a beautiful patterned dress, pull a few colors from the dress for everyone else's outfits. It's much easier than trying to choose everyone's clothing at once.
3. Think About Your Location
Your photo location can help guide your color palette.
For an outdoor session with lots of greenery, warm neutrals, creams, denim, earth tones, and soft colors can photograph beautifully. For an in-home session, consider the colors and style already present in your space.
4. Add Texture and Layers
Different textures can add dimension without making your photos feel too busy.
Think sweaters, denim, linen, knits, jackets, flowing dresses, or subtle accessories. Layers can also give us more variety without requiring a complete outfit change.
5. Avoid Distracting Logos
Unless a logo is intentionally part of your look, try to avoid clothing with large words, characters, or graphics. These can pull attention away from the most important part of the photograph — you and your family.
6. Most Importantly, Be Comfortable
If you're uncomfortable in an outfit, chances are you'll feel it during your session.
Choose clothing that fits well, allows you to move, and makes you feel confident. This is especially important for little ones. Comfortable kids are much more likely to play, smile, and give us those natural moments we love.
